Consumption In The Time Of Recession November 9, 2008

Times are tough or so every newspaper, news show, nosy neighbor, etc. says. Perhaps you’ve even begun to feel the pinch every time you go food shopping or to the gas pump – and by pinch, I don’t mean one of those light playful ones given by a lover or your football coach BUT I mean one of those hard, mean ones the 6th grade bully used to inflict on you. Err, I think you know what I’m getting at… anyway, I know that I’m worried- the live-in bf and I are both freelancers and just moved into a new rental. We have a lot more space at the new place but the rent is also $450 more a month than the old apartment. It’s a good thing that my freelance work is pretty steady – I’ve worked pretty much everyday for the past 4 years – don’t let me get into the evils of the company and why they would rather keep an army load of workers on freelance- I could go on for days.

Anyway, so the bf and I have decided to be proactive and try to slash our bills and cut back like every scared American is doing right now. But we don’t want our lifestyles to change drastically. I mean we like good food and fun… and well, consumption in general. (Don’t blame me – blame the advertisers – I’m a product of my generation and a marketer’s wet dream.) Again, anyway – I guess we want to be smarter about or spending. Less wasteful.

So, how to make small changes to our spending that make snowball into big savings? We took a long hard look at what we were spending our precious dollars on and we decided to make changes to it.

Some of the easy changes I made:

1. I changed my cell phone plan – after reviewing – I wasn’t using all my minutes – so I chose the plan that was a step down in minutes. It’s been working out just fine.

2. The bf wanted to get rid of the Netflix but I convinced him that cutting down the plan to the unlimited one at a time was the better way to go. I suppose we are really overstimulated between that, our cable (which includes HBO and Showtime), our magazine subscriptions, our books and all the crap we watch online. Heh, we may still end up closing our account later BUT Netflix lives to fight another day.

3. We’ve been eating in a lot more. At the old apartment, we were surrounded by a lot of great restaurants so, running downstairs for lunch or dinner or a snack was as easy as breathing – now, it’s a little bit of a walk to a good restaurant – and that has been helpful in forcing us to cook more. I actually do like cooking – it’s finding the time for it that is a challenge. But last week, we were able to make a few good things that also became bring to work lunches. We made my grandmother’s veggie soup, short rib curry, baked chicken, and I think we even steamed a flounder at some point. Last night, we had some friends over for hot pot. (All easy recipes to follow in the next posting.) Eating in has a number of benefits – it’s cheaper than eating out. It’s a lot healthier. And, I think my cooking skills are slowly improving. It still takes me forever to chop veggies but I’m eyeing this gadget that may change all that – which a friend gave us a 20% off coupon for.

4. So, that last sentence leads me into change number 4… coupons. There are a ton of coupons out there that will help you save a lot of money. I have found coupons on food, clothing, electronics, etc. My friend gave us a ton of coupons for Bed, Bath and Beyond. Some of the coupons have expired but Bed, Bath, and Beyond still honors them. While it’s one coupon per item, the store actually lets you use as many coupons per visit as you’d like. Cutting coupons is not fun or sexy but you’ll thank yourself when you have a few more dollars in your wallet. Dollars that can be spent somewhere else!

My best friend actually is the one who got me into thinking like a smart shopper years ago. We don’t pay full price retail for any of our clothes, bags, shoes or accessories. We live in New York City and there are sample sales every other week, discounted clothing stores (hello, Century 21 and Loehmanns), and coupons for other stores. And especially right now – retailers are desperate to get shoppers attention – so, with some good googling – you can find some great details. I actually signed up for some emails from stores – yes, I know getting their emails can be annoying at times – BUT, by signing up I was able to get an email from Club Monaco saying they were discounting a lot of their inventory to 40% off which also Neiman Marcus sent a similar email. I also got coupons for Sephora, Gap&BR&OldNavy&PiperLime, Jcrew, H&M, etc. So, it actually does pay to sign up for store announcements. And through some very stylish friends, I got forwards for a plethora of sample sales that are going on. So, don’t pay full price for it!

Anyway, that’s all my ADD brain can churn out today. I’m going to go read the NY Times… ummm, also free if read online which I have been doing for years.

Sammy’s Halal Cart August 23, 2007

I got lucky today. There was no line at Sammy’s Halal cart. There’s almost always a mess of people waiting at this well loved cart. The crowds have been constant since they recently made NY Mag’s Best Carts list.

Their 2006 Vendy Award Trophy is proudly displayed on the side of the cart. The workers always seem pleasant. They seem to be good at remembering who came in what order as to keep the ordering fair.

So, I ordered my usual chicken “sandwich” with white sauce. All the other sauces are HOT. I can’t handle any of them. The chopped chicken comes in a fluffy white pita. For the beau I ordered his usual lamb platter. He likes the lamb at Sammy’s b/c he says it’s never too greasy like most other carts make it.

So, the platters are $4.99 – they come with the meat (lamb or chicken), rice, and veggies (I think it’s just lettuce). For $5,99, you can get a combo meat platter. But I think the best deal is the one Sammy’s doesn’t list… order a regular platter but ask for an add on of pita & a can of soda… the total cost for that is $5.99. So you’re paying only a dollar extra for a soda and a toasted pita. Yum.

Btw, I read “Skinny Bitch” and it scared the hell out of me for a few days. I wouldn’t eat any meat. I dunno… I think about becoming a vegetarian or a vegan sometimes… there’s such a strong case for it- healthwise and etc. But damn, I do love my hotdogs and meatballs and bbqs. We’ll see I guess.

I’m reading “End of Mr. Y” right now and I love it so far.

Pink Floyd Crooned About It. All I Know Is I Need It. Moneyyyy. August 9, 2007

Filed under: Budget, Exercise, Fitness, budgeting, diet, lifestyle, money, new york city — ency @ 9:54 pm

I’ve always been bad about budgeting. In fact, I’ve never been able to stick to any budget that I’ve created. I’m not frugal. I’m too generous with my money. I like nice things way too much. I like eating out. I’m a walking talking consumer extradonaire and a marketer’s dream.

Well, it’s time to change my ways.

For the next few months (let’s say at least til the end of the year- so, that’s 4 months), I want to be able to save half of my monthly paycheck. My rent is about 25% of my monthly pay- which leaves me with about 25% to live on.

I think it’ll be hard but doable. That means making some sacrifices- something else that I’m not very good at. That 25% “allowance” money is going to have to cover my groceries, monthly metrocard, entertainment, etc.

So, I guess, for the next few months- I’m going to try to bring my lunch to work. I’m going to try to cook dinner at home as much as possible from Mon – Fri. Any dining out should really only take place on the weekend. Egads.

I am going to avoid stores! Or somehow build up my willpower. I need some fall/winter basics – but that’s it. Have to make a list and stick to it!

I don’t want to deny myself too much because- well, because I DON’T want to. Life is meant to be enjoyed… I just have to do it more responsibly.

Somehow in the next few months that 25% allowance is also going to have help me cover my half of a new imac- a small engagement party I’m throwing for one of my best friends, a camping trip- oh, and we’re making dinner for one of the bf’s best buds and his wife this weekend. Not to mention next week’s trip to Cape May. Raw roh, Shaggy!

I am in desperate need of a new bikini for the trip. Why does such small scraps of fabric cost sooo much? Most of the stores only have odds and ends of swim wear. I couldn’t find any matching tops and bottoms at a bargain price at any of the usual stores.

So, it’s either shell out some big bucks for a bikini or somehow lose some weight to fit in the ones I already have. They’re a little too snug.

Guess who’s going to be dieting and working out like mad in the next week?

How the hell am I going to throw a nice engagement party on a budget?! I’m not crafty!

I need to figure out how to earn some extra dollars!

Arunee Thai August 8, 2007

We’re too lazy to cook tonight. So, we’re going to go eat at one of our favorite neighborhood restaurants, Arunee Thai.

It’s a cozy restaurant with a nice waitstaff. Some of the standouts there are the pad thai, pineapple fried rice, chicken mussaman, the soft shell crab, and the satay appetizers.

Heh, the bf used to have a crush on one of the waitresses there. Eye candy.

Our Take On Chinese Dinner August 7, 2007

We cooked tonight. We did our take on Chinese food that my grandmother used to cook for me. I miss her.

Groceries out here in Jackson Heights are so much cheaper than in Midtown! I went to the HK supermarket in Elmhurst. I picked up napa, yau choy, 1 lb of ground pork, 25 pieces of chicken wings, a 2 lb sea bass, three heads of garlic, one chunk of ginger, scallions, soy sauce, oyster sauce, ribs sauce, a box of tofu and an onion for twenty one bucks.

It was just the bf and I for dinner tonight so we didn’t cook everything. We made steamed sea bass, tofu & pork, bbq’d chicken wings, yau choy and brown rice. The bf and I work well together in the kitchen. I joke that he’s my sous chef but I think we both know that I’m his.

Here’s a sort of how to – to the meal we made tonight.

1. Steamed Sea Bass

We over steamed this. Online we found that it said to steam a 1 & 1/2 lb sea bass for approximately 15 mins or until the meat is firm. I think my aunts at home definitely don’t even steam it for that long. I think the general rule of thumb is to let it cook til the meat is white and flaky.

The sauce is the best part to the steamed sea bass. Unfortunately I can’t tell you exact measurements b/c I just do what my aunts do- splish and splash haphazardly.

For the sauce, you will need soy sauce, oil (we used olive but my aunts use canola), ginger, scallions. All you have to do is heat all the ingredients together. I heat the oil first then quick cook the ginger & scallions – I then, add the soy sauce. But I don’t think there’s a hard rule to how you do it. You pour this sauce over your plated steamed fish i.e. after your fish is done steaming.

2 . Tofu & Ground Pork

I guess this is my ghetto version of Mao Pao Tofu. The bf doesn’t eat spicy so- we just made this plain.

We minced a ton of garlic in one of those small psuedo Magic Bullet blenders for this. After browning the garlic in oil, we added ground pork ( I just used a handful from my 1 lb chunk) to the pan. We seasoned the pork with sesame oil and some gourmet Spike seasoning.

After the pork is cooked, we added little cubes of the regular tofu to it. (Again, we didn’t use the full box- as it’s just two of us). To the mixture we liberally added soy sauce, oyster sauce, and water. We let the combo cook until the tofu was cooked to our liking. I think I overdid it a little with the soy sauce b/c it was a teensy bit too salty.

3. Bbq’d Chicken Wings

Okay, this is a hack job of a dish. I basically marinated the chicken wings in this rib sauce I found. It came out okay but I wish I could have found my Char Siu Sauce.

The way I usually make it is to marinate the wings in a blend of Char Siu Sauce, soy sauce and water. They come out really tasty.

I bake the wings at approximately 325 degrees to begin with and then just keep my eye on them from burning. If necessary, I turn up or down the temp.

4. Yau Choy

One of the easiest Chinese vegetable dishes to make. After cleaning the veggies, all you have to do is quick boil them. Just for a couple of minutes so that they’re not raw. After draining them- you just pour a little bit of oyster sauce over it.

All of it was really simple to make. And it all came out pretty tasty.

Nike Half-Marathon August 6, 2007

The bf and a friend ran in the Nike Half Marathon today. I dragged myself out of bed at 7 am to hopefully get a glimpse of them at the last cheering point. It was a weird experience. I’m not usually a sentimental person- but seeing the marathoners pass and hearing the sideline cheerers- made me a little teary eyed. I mean, it’s a huge feat – to run 13 miles?! All these people pushing their bodies to go, go, go!

I can’t do it. Well, not yet. I was inspired by all the runners today. And esp. by the beau. He’s crazy though- he only started training in the past three weeks. But he did awesome.

After that I took the marathoners out for a breakfast for champions at Elvie’s. Elvie’s serves Filipino fare. I had longanisa (yummy sausage), fruit salad (a fruit ambrosia), pancit (rice noodles) and pork sinagog (a vinegary soup). It was all pretty good. The pancit was a little flavorless but usually it’s pretty tasty. I could have probably flavored it up a bit with hot sauce but I was super lazy today. Reaching across the table to grab the hot sauce would have expended too much energy.

I was hoping to have some of their bbq’d chicken wings and lumpia shanghai (eggrolls!) but they weren’t ready yet.

I know why the bf is exhausted but why am I so tired? I must have sympathetic marathoner’s fatigue.

Daily Soup, Tossed Salads, Snicker, and Snickers August 2, 2007

Filed under: diet, food, foodie, lifestyle, midtown, new york city, restaurants — ency @ 1:41 am

Lunch today was a big salad from Daily Soup. My coworkers kept commenting on how big the bowl was. That comment later morphed into “my, what big balls you have”. And that later launched a discussion about “brown eyes”. I don’t know- sometimes my team gets too much sugar into their systems.

(If you have no idea what I’m talking about- congratulations- you’re a better person than I am.)

Anyway, Daily Soup is fantastic. They toss salads. (Not a snicker, please.) You choose your own ingredients and they toss (cough) it for you.

I had a mixed green salad with endamame, cubes of tofu, cheddar cheese, and tomatoes – all coated with a roasted garlic dressing. The dressing’s base was olive oil – not creamy.

I wanted to get a cup of Italian Wedding Soup too BUT they were out of it. That’s my favorite soup from there. They were also the first place that I ever went to that sold Lion Bars. Lion Bars are possibly the best candy bars in the world. They’re like a cross between a Snicker’s bar and a Kit Kat I think. It’s possibly the best thing out of the UK besides scones + clotted cream and shepherd’s pie. Oh and maybe TopShop.

Btw, one day I will remember to take photos of things- although I’m more literal than visual.

Shake Shack and The Last Days Of Meat? July 31, 2007

Filed under: diet, food, foodie, lifestyle, new york city, restaurants, shake shack — ency @ 11:18 pm

I had dinner at Shake Shack tonight with some friends. We waited for half an hour on line to order. And then it was about another half hour before our food was ready? Worth it? You bet.

I skipped the cheeseburger tonight but ogled my friend’s. It looked juicy. He said it was and more. He said it was flavorful and cooked perfectly. We split a Chicago Dog. I’ve never had a Chicago Dog before. I enjoyed every bite of it. The hot peppers were a little too hot for me but the cucumber made up for it.

I also had my own Taxi Dog. That’s probably my favorite thing at the Shake Shack. The sweet onion sauce over sauerkraut were the perfect sweet & sour combination on my tongue. Parts of the hotdog tasted a teensy bit salty but that didn’t stop me from chowing the whole thing down.

I also had bites of my friend’s ’shroom burger- fried to a perfection with surprise cheesy goodness inside. I mean, I know the cheese is in there but every time I have it- it’s like a nice surprise- a party in my mouth. = )

The shake she had was quite tasty too.

I think this may be my last Shake Shack meal for awhile. I’m sorta of inspired to eat healthier. One of my friends looked amazing. She was fit and thin. She told me that she’s been detoxing and hasn’t had any meat for a couple of weeks now.

She eats a lot of tofu and seafood and salad instead. She said she may add on chicken at some point but doesn’t want to eat any other meat. She noticed that the past couple of weeks- not only does she look great but she feels great too.

Hmmm. I’m impressionable. I wanna be like Mike. I want to be fit, healthy and feel great. I ‘m naturally sort of thin. But definitely not fit. And these past few months of food splurging has definitely made my clothes tighter – but on the plus side- I have my boobs back! Yay. But I guess I’d rather be healthy.

Maybe I’ll give the tofu diet a gung ho try. Maybe at least during the work week? I don’t know… I heart food.

Hill Country BBQ NYC July 29, 2007

Filed under: food, foodie, hill country bbq, lifestyle, new york city, restaurants — ency @ 5:54 pm

Hill Country Barbecue was delicious! We tried a little bit of almost everything there. Between the five of us- we shared pork spareribs, chicken, sausages (regular & jalepeno cheese), moist brisket, lean brisket, prime rib, and pork chops.

We also had sides! Skillet cornbread, mac & cheese, potato salad, baked beans, mashed sweet potatoes, and thick slices of white bread to help sop up the grease. The boyfriend and I shared a big mason jar of sweet tea that wasn’t really that sweet BUT it was quite refreshing.

We also tried sharing some Blue Bell icecream which some of my Texan friends have claimed is the best ice cream ever… well, it wasn’t quite the best icecream ever and at $4 a pop for like less than one scoop in a container- it was sort of a rip off BUT it was good.

So our favorite picks to eat at Hill Country are the moist brisket and the chicken. They were really tasty and juicy. The chicken is also really cheap! The mac & cheese, baked beans (ham or something baked in there too!), potato salad, and the skillet corn bread are all worth trying as well.

Unfortunately our eyes were bigger than our bellies so we had a bit of food leftover and our bill was crazy! But I think, had we eaten like normal people do and not like gluttons- our bill would have been quite affordable.

The set up of the restaurant is a little weird though. You have to get a card ticket to go inside to get food. The ticket is where they mark down everything you buy but you don’t pay to the very end.

There was a bit of a wait to get tickets yesterday because there was no seating. Luckily for us – our two prompt friends were already there!

Once you get in- you have to go to the different stations to get food. The meat station and the sides station are a bit too close to each other.

Sorry, I was so busy eating that I didn’t even take any photos. But you shouldn’t live vicariously through me anyway!
